1. Layer Up Like a Pro
Your wardrobe can make or break your winter rides. The key is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat from making you cold, add an insulating mid-layer to trap heat, and finish with a windproof and waterproof outer shell to block the elements. Don’t forget insulated gloves, a thermal cap under your helmet, and a solid pair of shoe covers to keep your feet from turning into icicles.
Remember it's not about the quantity of socks, but the quality. Too many layers of socks will block circulation and can even make your feet colder. Heated socks are incredible for those really cold days, but wool socks are a must-have for any winter ride. Great socks, paired with winter cycling shoes will make a world of difference.
Here are a couple brands/products we’d recommend for all your winter layer needs:

- Pearl Izumi AmFIB Lite Gloves (Mid-range cold 30-45°F)
- Bar Mitts or 45NRTH Sturmfist 4 (Extreme cold below 30°F)
- Footwear:
- Shimano MW702 (Winter Cycling Shoes)
- 45NRTH Wölvhammer (Winter Cycling Shoes)
- Castelli Estremo Toe Covers (Shoe Covers for mild cold)

2. Watch Out for Your Battery (E-Bikers, This One’s for You!)
If you're riding an e-bike, keep in mind that cold temperatures can zap your battery life. When charging your battery, charge it indoors where it is warm, and plan to stop the charge between 30-80%, to keep the battery in optimal health. Store the battery indoors when not in use, and if you're heading out for a long ride, try keeping it warm with an insulated cover. Expect anywhere from 15%-30% reduced range on your e-bike while riding in colder weather. If you want to go for longer rides either carry an extra battery, or plan on using more of your own power to reduce the strain on your battery.
3. Keep Your Tires Happy with Tannus
Cold pavement and slick roads mean you need the right tires for the job. Consider swapping to wider tires with lower pressure for better traction, or even studded tires if you’re dealing with ice and snow. For added reliability, Tannus Armour and Tannus Airless Tires provide extra protection against flats and improved grip in winter conditions. The last thing you want is to fix a flat with numb fingers in freezing weather, Tannus keeps you rolling no matter the terrain.
Here are a few bike tires we’d recommend for all your winter rides:
- For Commuting & Road Riding:
- Tannus Airless Tires (100% Puncture Proof)
- Continental Top Contact Winter II (Great for wet, slushy roads)
- Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus (Studded for icy conditions)
- Vittoria Randonneur Trail (Good grip and puncture protection)
- For Mountain Biking:
- 45NRTH Wrathchild (Aggressive studded tire for deep snow/ice)
- Maxxis Minion DHR II with EXO+ Casing (For mixed winter trails)
- Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro (Studded for hardcore winter riding)
- For Fat Biking:
- 45NRTH Dillinger 5 (Studded, excellent for icy trails)
- Maxxis Colossus (Non-studded, great for deep snow)
4. Stay Visible in Low Light
Winter means shorter days and more time spent riding in dim light. Equip your bike with front and rear lights (bright ones—think at least 500 lumens for the front). Reflective gear and clothing will help drivers and fellow riders see you long before you pass by.
5. Smart Route Planning
Your favorite summer route might not be the best option in winter. Look for well-maintained roads or trails, avoid areas prone to black ice, and consider sticking to shorter loops in case the weather takes a turn. If it’s a really bad day, there’s no shame in hopping on an indoor trainer to get your miles in.
6. Take Care of Your Bike (Because Salt is a Killer)
Winter roads mean slush, grime, and road salt—all of which wreak havoc on your bike. Give it a rinse after rides, keep the drivetrain clean, and apply lube that’s rated for wet and cold conditions. If you’re on an e-bike, check the connections and keep an eye on exposed electrical components. You want to make sure all battery terminals, connectors, and wiring are dry and secure before charging.
And did you know that using Tannus Armour or Tannus Airless Tires can also help protect your rims from impacts and harsh winter conditions?
7. Adjust Your Mindset: Winter Riding is an Adventure
Riding in the cold isn’t just about staying warm, it’s about enjoying your passion all year long! Crisp air, empty roads, and the satisfaction of pushing through tough conditions make winter rides uniquely rewarding. Plus, you’ll be ahead of the game when spring rolls, ready to tackle the routes you’ve been dreaming about all winter!
